review 1: Kadare explores Albanian history and culture in this almost allegorical novel. The plot focuses on one of two Doctors called Gurameto in the border city of Gjirokastër (birthplace of the author) and the fateful dinner he hosts for the commander of the invading German Army in 1943. The ripples from this dinner spread forward in time into the communist dictatorship and back into Albanian history. Enigmatic and beautifully written.
review 2: Almost novella-like, this story is classic Kadare: surreal and irrational characters and actions are thrown together to puzzle the mind about what life really could have been like in the Balkans during WWII and in the communist era that followed it. At the same time, it feels vague and unfocused, with a lot of threads left ha
... morenging. A key scene at the beginning is being referred to over and over throughout the book, yet its significance is never fully explained. With some unnecessary tangents and little character development, this is not Kadare's finest work, but it's still better than a lot of the other modern "stuff" out there. less

Entra tirania, sai tirania e o pequeno país dos Bálcãs segue sendo pisoteado e sobrevivendo.

Albania is good until the Nazis and Communists pour in. This is bleak.
