review 1: I can guess why this book has such a low rating - most of people who read and rated this had to read it for school, which automatically means lower rating. Add that and the fact that you need a dictionary for the archaisms, and there you have it.To be honest, I wouldn't have picked it up if I hadn't had to read it for school. But once I gave it a chance, it wasn't so bad. It even got slightly better as I progressed. I actually understood most of the text - the dialect was close enough to the language we speak today. The writing itself, although sometimes difficult, painted beautiful scenery. The characters, with an exception of Smail-aga, were flat and idealized. Smail-aga had a depth that surprised me. Here, he isn't just a tyrant. It is clearly shown he could have been a... more good man, but he went a different way.All in all, this is one of Mažuranić's most famous works. It's worth a read, even if only because it's part of Croatia's heritage.
review 2: Since this is usually considered as the best piece of Croatian National Revival, you can easily tell that Romantic era in Croatia was completely out of focus. Long story short this is tedious and unreadable. The only reason why I gave it two stars instead of one, which it actually deserves, is because of the character of Smail-aga. I can't even make myself explain it any further, it's that much boring. less

Of course that teenagers don't like to read when they have to read something so heavy in school.
