review 1: This gender reflective Manga is unusual because it combines a serious topic with inane hilarity. The heroine is battling her own deeply ingrained habits and ideals in an attempt to conform. Conformity for a girl means pleasant, sweet, cute, etc.Mafuyu is just not that kind of girl. She is, in the eyes of society, a guy-like delinquent. She is deeply honorable, but it is not valued because of her propensity for violence. She is determined to change, but before she even begins at her new school, one of her teacher's sabotages her efforts. Why? I'm not entirely sure. This is one of the things that makes me want to read the next volume.Takaomi, her teacher, harasses and supports her in equal measures. He obviously instigates or exacerbates some of her struggles. And he... morer new, reluctant, friend ,Hayasaka-kun, is equal parts emo bad-ass and stumbling teen boy.I suppose I identify with Mafuyu, to some degree. She's a yanki and I'm a yankee. Despite oceans and continents between our cultures, the terms are fairly similar. Hah!
review 2: I loved Mafuyu but mainly because of how she first reacts to Takomi Saeki - who himself is rather an awesome mix of punk and adult. She is delightfully innocent while at the same time being an awesome fighter~ I love how her fidgeting need to go to the bathroom was like a pressure building for Hayasaka! Really the intro of both male characters was very cute! Also loved the balcony scene - jumping three stories to escape answering why a teacher?!Mafuyu has a rather healthy relationship with Hayasaka but it's not totally her - with how she has to trip to fight goons and keep her abilities hidden. And a rather unhealthy relationship with Takomi but it's the more fun time and the more intriguing one!Love the drawings, especially when she wears the bunny mask! The story feels really random and isn't really clear at all. It's obvious Takomi is running things and as in their past Mafuyu is trailing behind him. I love this history between the two of them and wonder how Hayasaka fits into it all! less
