review 1: I really enjoyed this book! It is made up of a number of vignettes, told in installments throughout the novel. Although they are all separate storylines...they are tied together by the underlying theme of the diamond/engagement tradition in the US, and sometimes the stories come together and overlap in unexpected ways. Interesting look at the views of love and marriage across different time periods, countries and cultures.
review 2: Had this had been an audio book instead of a hard copy in my hands, I would have thought the player was set to shuffle. Not only did the author vacillate from one set of characters to three other sets (not counting the opening characters), she jumped around in years, and even the chapters set in certain years had flashbacks of thei
... morer own! You knew the year, but nothing was in chronological order, even within chapters. You would just get interested in one story line and voila! You are back a couple of decades with all different characters. Whew! The author did at long last tie up the loose ends in a somewhat untidy bow. Parts were quite interesting, but she overdid some of the character development and let other more interesting things slide. We really got the picture that Jimmy was overworked and underpaid and the life was a constant money struggle. But, besides his drinking, that’s about all we know about his life. Much the same could be said about the other characters. This novel could have done with some better editing and about 150 fewer pages. Quite a fascinating idea for a novel – follow the diamond – but perhaps it could have been better told in a more orderly fashion. The best part of the book was the last couple of chapters and they were over too soon. After stringing us along forever, it seemed like the author was in a rush to finish. less
