February’s theme was a new-to-you author. I didn’t stick with the theme because my brain is wonky and didn’t feel like reading much so far this month. I’m just glad to have read at least one book from my tbr pile so I’m not complaining.
And I’m not complaining about having read Taking a Shot. It was a good, solid read! I last read Jaci Burton in 2011. I’ve been buying up the Play by Play series over the years but just never got around to reading them. And I’ve been on a bit of a sports kick lately so I when I saw Taking a Shot sitting on the shelf, I thought why not?
If you want to score, you have to get in the game… The last thing Jenna Riley needs is more sports in her life. While her brothers are off being athletic superstars, she’s stuck running the family’s sports bar, whether she likes it or not. Then in walks pro hockey stud Tyler Anderson. As much as Jenna would like to go to the boards with him, she’s vowed to never fall for a jock-even one as hot as Ty.
Ty, intrigued by the beautiful bar owner, becomes a regular. He senses that Jenna wants to do something more with her life. And as he gains her trust, the passion between them grows, as does Ty’s insistence that Jenna should start living for herself. With his encouragement, Jenna starts to believe it, too…
But first, Jenna has to figure out what she wants, what she needs, who she loves, and if she has the passion and pride to take a shot at having it all-including Ty…
Jenna Riley is surrounded by sports almost 24/7 so even though pro hockey player Ty Anderson revs her engine, she denies herself the pleasure of his company. The last thing she needs is to start something up with a professional hockey player. Ty is persistent though and he slowly wears her down. Things start off casual but eventually feelings get involved. It was a nice change of pace to see them not really fighting their feelings. The conflict comes from Jenna’s inability to see her potential and her fear to act on it. When Ty tries to push her, she always shuts down.
I thought Taking a Shot was a solid read. The characters didn’t annoy me (and Jenna had the potential to be annoying but she wasn’t -yay-) and the story moved along at a steady pace. I liked the gradual development of Jenna and Ty’s relationship. Ty was a sweet hero. He wasn’t looking to start a relationship but he really liked Jenna and he didn’t deny his feelings. Jenna was kind of hung up on the sports thing but she didn’t turn her nose up at it. She supported Ty and even got to know people in his circle like the other players’ wives. I liked Ty’s teammates and it was good to see Jenna’s brothers and family.
Overall, Taking a Shot gets a solid B from me. Fans of sports romances will enjoy this one.
