review 1: From a historical perspective, this is a hugely informative and compelling book. Unfortunately, it's greatest weakness is that it features very little of the actual conversations between Dr. Kelley and Hermann Goering. Their face-to-face should have been the most riveting delivery of the premise of the book. I suspect those possibilities are why this book was optioned for a movie adaptation before it was even published.
review 2: This is maybe the creepiest nonfiction book I've ever read. Dr. Douglas Kelley, a young military psychiatrist, is assigned in 1945 to evaluate the top Nazis and render his opinion whether they are fit to stand trial for war crimes at Nuremberg. Kelley's private agenda is to try to understand the factors that enable a man to commit such
... more evil as the Nazis'. Goering is the top-ranked (although Hess would claim that honor for himself); he and Kelley have much in common: high intelligence, drive, a desire to be the center of attention, a habit of collecting various things, and more. Goering and Kelley enjoy each other's company and develop quite a relationship. The rest of Kelley's life would constitute a spoiler if I revealed it here. less
