review 1: Irena Sendler was a Irish Polish Catholic and a child welfare worker in Warsaw in the 1930's and when Hitler invades and takes over Poland with the complicity of Poles Irena becomes a member of Zagota an underground organization that tries to save as many children from the ghetto as can be managed. The Warsaw ghetto was one of the largest in Europe and two death camps were built nearby to eradicate the people in the ghetto.Treblinka ! and 2 were death camps. Irena saved over 2500 children and received the honour of being among the Righteous. She kept the names of the children in jars buried under an apple tree. She died at the age of 98 in Poland.
review 2: This book started out a little strange for me. I didn't realize that it involved a group of teenagers stud
... moreying choosing a history project for a high school contest. So it was confusing at first. But after the teenagers' story and introduction, the book went immediately into the story of Irena Sendler, a Polish woman caught between the World War II Jewish Ghetto in Warsaw and her conscience that made her save Jewish children from the extermination camps at enormous risk to her own life. A fascinating book that merges a modern-day search for forgotten history and the story of an unbelievably brave woman risking everything to save the future. less
