review 2: This was not always a pleasant book to read but I’m glad I did.Set in New Zealand, the book centers around a college law professor and a student in her law history class. It begins as an infatuation between a student and teacher, a May-December romance that is typical of th
... moree basics of the romance genre. All resemblances to ordinary end there.LIVING IN SHADOW is a dark novel that explores the minds of two damaged people, one by sexual abuse, and the other by war. Lucien’s obsession with Eleanor is consuming him and once they take the step into a sexual relationship, so many feelings and memories he’s kept buried for years come back to haunt him. Eleanor was abused by her husband before finally breaking free of his hold. Now she’s a confident, independent woman who runs her own show despite her lingering feelings of distrust in her relationships with men. Together, both characters must learn to trust not just each other but themselves, shedding the baggage of the past as they do. I found it fascinating that the story, while classified as a romance, really isn’t per se. It’s a psychological novel that delves into the psyches of its main characters, showing the reader how they conquer their fears and come to terms with who they were and are. The fact that Lucien and Eleanor fall in love often seems secondary to the story. It’s not a novel for the faint of heart. There are some graphic scenes of violence and sex and descriptions of violent actions involving children. Lucien’s plight is a very real one in many parts of Africa and Asia today. It’s a powerful story to be shared. less
