review 1: I really like Jackie Bouchard as a writer. She is someone who enjoys her craft and thinks hard about her characterisation. I am not someone who is generally drawn to "women's fiction" as a genre (can't believe I actually used the word genre!!) but the characters draw you in and you want to know how things work out. I preferred her second novel "Rescue Me, Maybe" to which I gave 5 stars, hence this gets 4. But she does not disappoint. And of course any books which features a dog (or cat!!!) will be a hit with me :)
review 2: This heartwarming tale about love, life, and starting over will resonate with anyone who's ever experienced a seismic, world-crumbling shift and wondered, "What's next?" When we first meet workaholic accountant Maggie Baxter, she's presented... more with incontrovertible proof that her husband is having an affair. This proof comes in the form of a trashy lavender thong not belonging to her that was consumed by her Lab Kona aka the canine garbage disposal and retrieved from the dog's stomach by her vet. A devastated Maggie confronts her two-timing hubby, her college sweetheart and the only man she's ever loved, and the fallout isn't pretty. She's left alone, devastated and immobilized by her post-breakup grief.With the help of her Smurfs-loving brother, some supportive new friends, and of course, the always faithful and enthusiastic Kona, Maggie starts down a path that she hopes will lead her to happiness and self-actualization. It's not an easy or clear-cut path since she's unsure about what she wants to do with the rest of her life and she has no clue how to date since she hasn't been single in over twenty years, but that's what her pals and Kona are for! They inspire, encourage, and lead by example, and she starts taking her cues from them in an effort to become the new and improved Maggie.I closed this wonderful book with a smile on my face and a tear in my eye, knowing that my new friends, Maggie and Kona, were right where they were supposed to be. Kudos to author Jackie Bouchard for her wit, creativity (I want to attend a Halloween theme party where everyone comes dressed as their favorite artist or painting!), and her fabulous characterizations, including the book's very memorable titular canine. I can't wait to see what other great stories Ms. Bouchard has up her sleeve!I received a copy of What the Dog Ate in exchange for an honest review. less
