review 1: This book finally got interesting after about 100 pages. The switching between past and present was more tedious in this book. Often I wasn't engaged enough to remember what had happened previously when I picked it back up. Most of the middle of the book I preferred the present-day story of Nicole but at some point I got tired of her. The author doesn't let you inside anyone's head so I felt like some attitudes came out of nowhere, namely Nicole's ferocity at times. Interesting theme and set in Paris but I didn't love it.
review 2: This is the April selection for my book club. This book was very difficult for me to get into at first. Eventually I did become engaged with the story and was curious to see what would happen. The story is told from the perspectiv
... moree of 2 different women in Paris. I liked one story much better than the other and would probably have preferred the story if it had been told compeletely from the post-War character's perspective. The book was mostly well written but there are many awkward sentences. I found myself having to re-read several sections to fully grasp their meaning. I also found the french words at the start of the chapters and throughout the book distracting and frankly a bit pretentious. I think I would have liked the book much more without the french language lesson. less
