review 1: I'm glad that Caroline released these interviews. I was very young when Kennedy was assassinated, but I remember the shock of everyone around me. I remember watching the funeral and seeing their children standing there as the funeral procession passed. I'm sad that the interviews done later will not be available until 2067...long after I'm gone. Much of the politics of the time and later are put into a perspective that makes a light bulb go off realizing why certain things happened as they did. Yes, some of her interview is fragmented, she has to be reminded of things, she repeats information a few times, but these interviews began only four months after her husband was assassinated. I'm surprised she had the presence of mind to even convey what she did. I remember the fe... morear of nuclear war, bomb shelters, and elementary school drills. When Mrs. Kennedy speaks of the nuclear crisis and possible attack and how she and her children would stay with president Kennedy at the White House it takes you right back to that era. I do not believe that you need to be 55+ to get a sense of that time, or the implications of decisions made then that impacted us decades later. That would be like saying that reading/learning about any history is not necessary because it's not relevant to your lifespan. We are in the midst of the same cold war crisis that plagued the 50's and 60's. If we don't pay attention to past history, we often repeat it. Wouldn't it be nice if interviews with Martha Washington, Mrs Truman...or the multitude of other women behind the man were available. She certainly presents a different view in comparison to "Profiles in Courage." Her views are from a wife and mothers perspective. I appreciate that she revealed the personalities of those around her that are part of our history, including the Eisenhower's. I wish there had been more discussion about our involvement in Vietnam.Overall, I think these interviews present a slice of what life was like in the Kennedy white house. Whether, as women we like it or not, her view of a wifes place comes through clearly for that era.Thank you Caroline...
review 2: This audio book is fascinating. It's a bit chilling to hear the First Lady being so candid about the President and their private lives. To able to hear her voice and conversations with Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr., is a historical dream. You can always read these events, like the Cuban Missile Crisis, but hearing her express her feelings that she wanted to be with JFK and their kids, if something would happen, is something that you can't get from text or even from film. Listening from the actual recordings is awesome because besides the actual conversation, you can hear Jackie Kennedy light her cigarette and inhaling, ice cubes rattling in her drinks, and planes flying in the background. These forgotten detail makes their conversations comes alive. There is one point in the audio book where Schlesinger ask John-John if he miss his father. John-John, which an innocent of a child, responded to him that his father is in heaven. The only way to read this title, is through audio. Wonderful conversations. less
