The book starts with a woman ranting about how human relationships changing because of new technologies.
Then the next chapter focuses on a man, covered in blood, and he panics as he believes that his date is dead.
The book then introduces us to Anna, who I believe is the woman ranting at the beginning of the novel. Anna has moved back to England after spending her youth in America. Anna has a twin, Zoe, and in this first chapter it is clear that the sisters are very different. While Zoe is cheeky, brash, and successful with men, Anna is shy and wants to find the love of her life. She actually wants a husband and children, but so far Anna has only found what she calls love rats, men who have cheated on her. Now in England it is really difficult for her to make friends, let alone to meet men. So she thinks using a online dating website will be a good solution, and Zoe helps her write her profile. Zoe is critical about Anna’s naiveté and honesty, and she thinks she needs to be more assertive and lie a little about her qualities.
The next chapter is focused on Nick, who is on a date with Anna. Nick is the kind of man that Anna should run away from as his only purpose to use the dating website is casual sex. He even uses a fake name. The problem is that he didn’t read Anna’s profile, and now he realises that Anna is really looking for something serious, a commitment that he doesn’t want. Yet, he can’t bring himself to leave because Anna is different and we realise that he likes her, but he is not trustworthy. I feel so sorry for Anna because he is up to some disappointment if Nick deceives her like this. And is he the man from the previous chapter? Is he the one smeared in blood? Whose blood is it then? Anna’s?
