review 1: Esta bueno, inspirador.
review 2: Much of my views about this book is similar to my views on it's predecessor, Bringing Up Boys. I thought that was a good book with some good info for parents, especially fathers. Without repeating all I said in that review, I'll say that this in many ways is very similar in its strong words for fathers and advice for parents to
... morestay close to their kids. The biggest difference is obviously there is a lot more advice about specifically raising girls. I thought it was very helpful and offered some great things to think about as a father of a little baby girl. Like BUB, some of the things he says here are common sense, but are probably very useful to parents who are absolutely clueless. There are some chapters that really had my attention though, especially the one where he interviewed some college-age girls about their dads. That chapter just made me cry. There are many emotional points in this book, which made it more personal for me than BUB. And...there are some throwaway chapters. I was amazed at how many chapters were just copy/paste from other sources. One chapter he barely even added 3 sentences, and the rest was quoted from another book. Other chapters had large portions with quotations. While I don't mind quotations in citing other sources, there comes a point when it seems like a sophomore in high school writing a paper the night before it's due. On a few instances, there were portions of chapters that were meant to offer advice on how to deal with certain issues by detailing the advice point by point. The problem with those parts is that they seemed really contrived--almost like someone writing for a blog. They came off as inexperienced and unauthoratative, even preachy, like a bad minister preparing a sermon he can just phone in on Sunday. I skipped over several parts. Despite that, I will still say that it's worth reading if you have a daughter. There is a lot of information here, and I think the good outweighs the bad. You might not even have the same issues with the book that I had. less
