review 1: This is probably a solid 2.5, bordering on 3, but I didn't like it quite as much as other books I've given a 3, so.I think that the prologue (perhaps unfairly) biased me against the rest of the novel, as it just felt massively overwritten (I haven't read the Big Book, so I do wonder if some of it was meant to be a reference to that [apart from the steps and such, obviously], in which case, whoops). The rest is mostly less so.This is, as many people have pointed out (oddly close to furiously?), not so much a novel as a collection of semi-interconnected short stories. "James Franco" is a recurring character/occasional narrator, and there are some other recurring characters that arise whose stories are connected/identical to that of The Actor (in blue). There's a little behin... mored-the-scenes here and there that's probably semi-true at least, but I mean don't read it if you just want to know what famous actors are like.I think most people would give this book a bit more slack if it weren't written by James Franco, but I mean either I'm most people or there are other things not to like about it. Or both.I would say that if you want to read this you should just go ahead and do so. It's not super long and it's not terrible or anything; there are some interesting/good bits. But I mean if you're just like "hey he was in that one movie and also I don't like pomo hijinks and/or character-driven short stories" well then yeah stay away. If you want to like the characters (which, I completely believe that there are books out there with 100% likable characters; I just don't know if I could name one), that would also be a reason not to pick it up.
review 2: Sensation! I do not find James Franco attractive. I do, however, think he's a great artist. I do. I like his films, I love his directing, I'm super duper into the various art projects. But I do not find him attractive. And he sure as hell didn't get more attractive while I was reading this book. Damn, he became sort of ugly. James Franco finds James Franco attractive though. No. He finds James Franco super, mega, ultra hot. This book is about how James Franco is handsome and can get laid. There was one story that had something resembling a genuine point. Plot, too. It was good. It was called Faith & Victory. I liked it. I also liked the author photo of James Franco where he's all like "I'm famous and hot and I don't care", which, of course, makes no sense. If he didn't care, why would he write this book about how hot and famous he is?Conclusion: James Franco is sort of douchey which makes him funny in a "I-want-to-never-meet-him"-kind of way. less
