review 1: James Franco's book of poems, Directing Herbert White, is actually really good. You can tell at multiple points how pretentious and narcissistic the author is (I mean this is James Franco), but such momentary annoyances are quickly eclipsed by the power of the pieces. On a technical level alot of them stumble around a bit, but damn does he know how to end a poem. I found the hair standing up on the back of my neck on multiple occasions. Definitely recommend this book
review 2: So terrible. There is a section of "film sonnets" which are pretty good, free verse accounts of iconic films or iconic moments from iconic films. Beyond that, pretty terrible poems. There is a very privileged POV here though of course the lies of poets is a problem big enough for Plato to... more build a rather authoritarian state to avoid it. I fear that poems about Lindsay Lohan or Heath Ledger or "James Franco" may be the singular appeal for many readers, but whether the accounts are reliable is of secondary concern to the fact that they are artlessly related. less
