review 1: Just randomly picked this up, wanting to read a short non-fiction. As glaciers melt (so rapidly in the past 50 years) bodies as old as 5,000 years old have been discovered. From Incan children sacrificed to volcanoes to failed attempts at Everest, bodies are everywhere! Most shocking part of the book--billions of people rely on glacial melting (slow and steady) to give them all of their fresh drinking water...when the alpine glaciers on mountains are gone in the NEXT 50 years (on every continent except Australia) they will have none!
review 2: This book is fascinating. It is about how bodies and artifacts are beginning to appear as glaciers begin to recede. Even though the discoveries have been remarkable, scientists worry that the shrinking my be caused by g
... morelobal warming and as a result cause greater problems. The shrinking could also be the natural ice age cycle but we will only be able to tell when the cycle begins again in the future.I was amazed by the frozen children of the Andes. They were selected to be sacrificed for the Gods by the Inca. The children were either drugged, strangled or given a blow to the head before being entombed and left to freeze to death. Because of the cold temperature, they were well preserved and looked as if they were just sleeping. It is beleived that more frozen Inca mummies will be found as the ice continues to recede. This is a great book for boys. It would be a good book for an older student who is reluctant to read. It has a "gross" factor to it that boys like. I could see a group of boys huddling around this book discussing the pictures. It also has ways to help the environment in the back. A good activity for children would be to challenge them to try to one of the suggestions and then write about their experience. If they could not do the challenge, they could write about their difficulties in completing it. less
