review 1: This is a short story by James Melzer. A very quick read, it took me less than 10 minutes from beginning to end. Every winter, in a Pennsylvania town, the old man creates his snowmen art on his front lawn. He keeps them all winter by hosing them down once a week during the cold hours of night. His latest masterpiece, based on Transformers, is a hit with the children and their parents alike. But what is discovered once the spring thaw hits is a surprise to all. Even though this was a quick read, I enjoyed it very much. The descriptions were excellent and I could see the artistic images in my mind. I even felt a tad cold as I could hear the wind whipping around outside my living room window.
review 2: I enjoy horror and this book came highly recommended by anothe... morer horror fan. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy this. It's very short, so I didn't spend days poring over it, but there's nothing new or interesting to see here. The author certainly has a serviceable ear for dialogue, but the pace is uneven, the prose is unsubtle - even ham-fisted at times - and the denouement is painfully predictable. Put it this way: the shocking ending is exactly what you think it is. A little more build-up, perhaps a red herring or two, some deeper insight into the main character and fewer "nope, nothing evil or suspicious about this AT ALL!!!!" kinds of anvils might have made for a more engaging story. I do think this writer has potential and real ability - this isn't going to scare me away from reading another work by him that a friend recommended - I just think this was sort of a throw-away. less
