review 1: In general, I am drawn to nautical themed, non-fiction books. In this genre, Deep definitely tacks where most jibe, at least in my experience. Most of the action takes place below the surface and some strange stuff goes on down there, not least of which being the research conducted by scientists, pseudo-scientists, mad scientists and mad non-scientists. Spoiler alert: interspecies sex!I appreciate Nestor's writing — it's neither unnecessarily suspenseful or jargon laden. It also strikes just the right balance of subjective/objective and anecdotal/scientific evidence. And I truly appreciate his curiosity, candor, trepidation and ultimately bravery and success concerning free diving.
review 2: Wow! Deep is a thoroughly well written and
... more fascinating account of the sport of freediving, oceanographers working outside the normal sphere of "research", the animal life found at insanely deep depths that we know so little about, and other crazy tidbits of oceanic information that I found kind of mind-blowing. I wanted someone to be sitting right next to me as I read so I could constantly turn to them and say, "Wow, did you know?......"I found this book absolutely wonderful and would have been totally content if it had been twice as long! But, no freediving for me. I am happy to only read about it..... less

Before I read this book I thought freedivers were nuts. Now I totally want to get into it.

Even if you're not a free diver, this is a well written and fascinating read.
