review 1: 16 year-old Jude begins his new summer job flipping burgers at a Jones Beach concession stand meeting new people and admiring beautiful Becka from afar. His family life revolves around the drowning death of his young sister several years earlier, of which he takes the blame. His summer is finally going well until a tragic car accident takes the life of his best friend and Jude spirals into a depression. I found this book to be dreary, gloomy and depressing.
review 2: This was a hard one to rate. The first half of the book was teenage fluff with no real substance to fill it. The second part got a little better with some emotional tugging but in the end still failed to hit its mark. I definitely liked the 2nd half more than the first. I wish the author would have
... more explored the emotions in Jude's home more thoroughly and helped you understand how and why he felt the way he did. I eventually got attached to Jude but there was still something missing in the connection. I did cry and mourn with him in the second half of the book. less
