review 1: A whole high school transported to a weird alternate dimension to Lord of the Flies it out with student council members and inept teachers? My interest was captured even before the giant that didn't want to play football started holding hands with the theater geek and the girl who is terrified of the future started beating people with a baseball bat. This sweet YA story of horrifying bugs laying eggs under your skin and weird bat monkeys with far too many mandibles is made all the more appealing by the Wisconsin setting. Rather, the initial setting of Wisconsin. I'm not suggesting that I live in a hell dimension. But Tynion is clearly familiar with the area judging by how desperate the kids are to escape. Overall a truly charming horror book, the writing and the art compli... morement the story very well. I'm looking forward to reading more.
review 2: Decent first volume in a YA comic book series. It relies a bit too much on high-school stereotypes (the smart, driven class president, the dumb jocks, the drama nerds) but does have a solid sci-fi/horror backbone. It regresses a little too quickly into Lord of the Flies for my tastes. I didn't believe much of Sanami's character at all. Supposedly her family lives "off the grid" (without electricity, and, I'm assuming indoor plumbing) and she seems to have ALL the answers...about EVERYTHING. I liked the air of mystery behind Adrian, and the general sense of wonder at what, and how, an entire school teleported to wherever they are. The creators have some interesting concepts. However, some of the teen drama felt forced. While it isn't bad by any stretch of the imagination, being a fan of horror, I should have liked it more. less
