review 1: This was a sweet book and well written. Though part of a series, it read perfectly well as a standalone. The characters were interesting, complex, and likable. The story overall of a female doctor when such was rare and the challenges of her being accepted into that rural community had a very real feel. This book was heartwarming while also managing to avoid any corniness or eye rollingly pat scenarios. Well done!I'm not a historian, but I found nothing that jumped out at me as inaccurate or misrepresented. Unlike a book I read recently where a character said "Okay" in the 1600's. the history seemed well done.It probably deserves more stars than three, but the book never grabbed me with anything more than a gentle comfortable clasp.

I enjoyed the story, Ms. Watson is a very good writer, able to bring even the secondary characters to life, even though we’re not privy to their thoughts, we know exactly what is going through their minds by the detail given to expressions and actions. The town is superstitious of a woman doctor, though why that surprises Lilly remains a mystery. Having grown up in the mountains she should’ve known the mind-set of the mountain people. And since she was drawn back to them, then why did she fall in love with a “city slicker?” I hoped that she’d be able to find her place, be accepted as who and what she was, and find love in the process. If you enjoy historicals, then don’t miss SKIP ROCK SHALLOWS. If you especially love books set in the Appalachain, Blue Ridge, and other mountains of the east then you’re in for a treat. $12.99. 400 pages. less
