review 1: Jane Hamilton is a favorite author of Oprah's book club for good reason - she is a terrific story teller. Laura Rider admittedly isn't Hamilton's best story but it was a very interesting experiment in exploring what romance might mean in our modern world where women are intelligent and exercise leadership and where talk about sex is somewhere between private and public. I enjoyed the characters and the premise but the plot was clunky at times.
review 2: I could not wrap my brain around the premise of this book- that a wife would willingly help her husband begin an email affair (which blossoms into a real affair) with her media hero in the name of practicing her writing skills. By the end of the book I really disliked Laura Rider- she is self-absorbed and obli
... morevious to her effect on others' lives. The description of the book kept mentioning that this was a venture into humor by Jane Hamilton, but truly, it became apparent by the end that it is actually a tragedy. Too bad that Laura Rider messed up her marriage and wrecked a chance at having any kind of mutually positive relationship with her idol, Jenna. less

Quirky, I enjoyed this story but not as much as several of her earlier books.
