review 1: I did not expect to like this novel. In fact, I found it quite readable and oh so different from most things that I choose to read. The story, set in pre-Revolutionary War Boston, is really a modern novel that uses techniques and writing strategies from that time. The use of puns, riddles, newspaper clips, and clever prose is enjoyable and the historical details are extremely well researched, providing a view of Colonial Boston that was eye-opening. The main characters have modern sensibilities, yet those thoughts and behaviors are sharply contrasted with the politics, religion, and values of the 1700's. The two authors, both real historians, started this novel through email with each taking on the voice of one of the two main characters. Soon they realized that their d... moreigital volleyball game contained a real story and they went back to storyboard the book. The result is a "who-dun-it" that's just plain fun.
review 2: 21-year-old Fanny Easton, a talented painter and a 'fallen woman,' escapes the streets by disguising herself as a boy and becoming the apprentice of a portrait painter on the run from the law, who is in turn trying to save the life of a brilliant runaway slave. The story takes place in pre-Revolutionary Boston and is alternately a romance, a mystery, a farce (with deliciously crude humor), and a political drama. The writing is excellent -- the characters have remarkably clear voices, and there's a great deal of wordplay. Good stuff. less
