review 1: I can't think of a better book to take my Goodreads review virginity. I couldn't put it down from the moment I started reading and I hope more people have the chance to discover the author... though with all the great reviews I don't fathom that will be very difficult. It's very smart and well written. And also relatable for me, as I too am an immigrant and struggled with the same transition. In short, it's dabomb.com. Read it!
review 2: Gentle, enjoyable coming-of-age novel in a vibrant setting. I did not mind the book's leisurely pace, but felt the main character was a bit detached, mature and well-mannered for an 18 year old, even by late 1980's standards (of which I'm familiar); the first-person narration seemed to come from a point far in the future, which... more robbed the action of a sense of immediacy. However, the physical descriptions of India were wonderful and the shifting family dynamics rang true. less
