review 1: I bought this book after hearing Jeanne Darst read a story on NPR. I was a little thrown by what I would call a meandering style, but once I got into Jeanne's groove, I really enjoyed the stories. On a personal note, as an artist/author who is wound a little tight, it was refreshing and comforting for me to read about a person who basically rejected any kind of normal secure job and lived odd job to odd job and seemed to prefer it. It makes me think if my whole life came crashing down and I had to bag groceries for a living (not that there's anything wrong with that) that I would be OK.
review 2: Everyone will relate to parts of this book and the characters in it. The parents will have you saying " I thought my family was nuts! At least we aren't as crazy as
... more these people!" I personally appreciated the candid portrayal of the mother. If you have a parent who is self destructive, you may find comfort in the experiences of the main character. I could have written some of the text, it was true to parts of my life. Some graphic descriptions that I could have done without, but not enough to keep me from finishing this book. less

Another "Postcards from the Edge" type of book. The ending makes it a worthwhile read.
