review 1: I really enjoyed this unexpectedly interesting look into the jobs that we never think about people doing to help us live our daily lives. The cheerleader chapter felt totally out of place to me but I loved the coal mine, the beef industry, the truck driver and the oil rig but by far my favorite was the landfill. I think everyone should at the very least read the landfill chapter. I had no idea that trash could turn into power. That is utterly genius! My favorite quote of the book was "So we're stardust, literally. We are atomic waste!"
review 2: Ms. Laska presents the story of "Hidden America" the workers who make modern America's conveniences possible. Early in the book, she states "my political views have no place in this book" yet her political views were p
... moreresent throughout the book, more so in some stories than others. Because of that, I found some of the chapters very off-putting. I am a child of the suburbs who came from a long line of farmers and moved to small town American 10 years ago. Perhaps my origins and current community have never allowed me to forget the "hidden America." For me, this was not an "Extraordinary Exploration of the Unseen People...." Despite the fact that she spent so much time with each "segment" to gain the insight, the stories seem superficial. The book is an easy read, but was not one that I would highly recommend. less

Great view of professions not normally considered in depth. Well worth the time to read.

It didn't turn out as well as I thought it might, but it was not altogether regrettable.
