review 1: Every chapter contains a different look at an industry and individuals that keeps America functioning. Originally these pieces were published in GQ. By mining the individual's part in these industries, she has shown us pieces of America that we take for granted. The greatness of our country lies in these individuals living out their lives, working and raising families in their corner of America. Ms Laskas must be a very talented individual to make these varied people feel comfortable enough to allow her into their lives and families. She treated them with respect in her articles even when she clearly had different thoughts.
review 2: I fully expected a Mike Rowe endorsement on the book jacket, but alas, no word from the the Dirty Jobs guy. This book is a keeper
... more, one that I will reference and pass on to friends, colleagues and students--for the sheer humanity of the featured individuals. The chapter on air traffic controllers is unsettling at best. I learned about how technology determines the quality of our beef and I "grok" the spirituality of garbage. less
