review 1: This would have been a better book if I had read rather than listen to the audio version. Walls is not a good reader - another would have given the book more impact. However, the story could have come straight out of her life as it follows so closely the kind of experiences she had in her childhood as recorded in her memoirs. The characters are well developed and interesting. I am glad I read the book.
review 2: Couldn't decide between 3 and 4 stars. It was a fairly quick read, kept my interest even though it was predictable. Scenes of abusive adults just made me sad....and the responses of the two main characters were extremes (one withdrew into depression and almost-suicide and the other was resilient, plucky and could summon up the pluck to fight back). R... moreeality is most likely somewhere in between. I do recommend it. less
