review 1: Little Mouse Gets Ready is a graphic novel written by Jeff Smith. This book is also part of the Bakers Dozen collection. This was a really simple children's book, and I really enjoyed it. This is a great way to use critical element in the classroom, as well as making inferences. This would be a great book to make into a short movie. The students could pair up into groups of three. One student could film while the other two act out a story. The plot of the story is that Mama mouse keeps asking Little Mouse if he is ready. Little Mouse reply's "almost." He then gets ready to go to the farm. First he puts on his underwear, then his socks, then his pants, then his shoes, and lastly his shirt. When Mama mouse asks, "are you ready?" Little mouse reply's "Yes!" Mama comes to get ... morehim and says, "silly Little Mouse, mice don't wear clothes!" This is a great book for early readers, and would be great for a pre school- 2nd grade classroom. The pictures are also very simple, and are not a big distraction from the words, which I feel is very important in an early reader book. Overall I really enjoyed this book and gave it 5 stars!
review 2: Little Mouse Gets Ready-Little Mouse Gets Ready is a book for beginners. It is an introduction to graphic novels. I would introduce this book to my kindergarten class towards the beginning of the year to teach the lesson of responsibility and listening. To get them excited about the book I will simply show them the cover of the adorable little mouse and give them a brief preview of the mouse. I would let them know that the mouse really wants to go to the barn but first he has to get ready first. I will ask them to think about when they get ready in the morning for school and what some of the struggles are. This will be a way for me to relate the text using a Text- to Self Strategy.I will ask the children questions like:What is your favorite place to go? Have you ever been as excited to go some where as little mouse is to go to the barn?I will also ask them if they have ever been to a barn.Additionally, I will ask the children what kind of clothes they think Little Mouse will wear to the barn. Also to relate the text to them I would ask them what they would wear to go to the barn.To incorporate the Text to World strategy, I would link the environment to the book. The mouse is in a field in the picture and getting ready to go to the barn.I would ask the children, “Where do you think mice live?”With that I would talk about where mice live in the world. I would let the children know that like in the book, many mice live in fields but in the winter. Also I would tell them in those cold months most mice try to move into the barns and house. I would link the book to nature and talk about what animals might prey on mice. This will help the children get a clearer picture of mice and their environment. To help my students relate the book to another text using the Text to Text Strategy, I will ask questions like: “Have you ever read a book about a mouse?” or“ Can anyone think of a song about mice that are blind?”. Also I would ask, “Does anyone know of a particular Disney Mouse?”or I would ask them if they remembered when we read “If you Give a Mouse a Cookie?”If you give a mouse a cookie is a like in some ways. In If you Give a Mouse a Cookie, the mouse shows up at the house. This relates to Little Mouse gets ready the mouse is trying to go to the barn. In If you Give a Mouse a Cookie the mouse really wants a cookie, and then milk and so on. In Little Mouse Gets Ready the little mouse really wants to go to the barn. One exercise the class could do is make their own toon story about when they get ready in the morning.   less
