review 1: DC is now my home, and this slice of the city's history delighted me. During this era the city had roughly an equal number of free blacks and slaves. In a city that today loves its restaurants, Morley has demonstrated that a free black man, Beverly Snow, established the first. Most whites in DC still viewed slavery as acceptable, even if many found it abhorrent. Those whites opposed to slavery tended, like Francis Scott Key, to favor their return to colonies in Africa. Abolitionists were viewed as a dangerous, radical minority. Morley's work is scholarly and accurate, but his narrative makes the book a joy to read.

... morend it to anyone who is interested in learning more about the politics during this pivotal period before the Civil War. Also, a key character is Francis Scott Key, and his racism, although typical of the day, makes me wonder if we should really be using his song as our national anthem. less

Not a quick read, but a fascinating book. If only it were required reading in schools!
