review 1: I expected to like this book, and did. It did get a little dry in places. It is set in England in a time before Queen Victoria. It was interesting how easily the sisters were able to integrate into English society with just a few letters of introduction. But I suppose from there they would have had to use their wit and charm to be the successes that they were. An introduction will only get your foot in the door. After that it’s all up to you.
review 2: (3.5 stars) This book details the lives of the Caton sisters, heiresses from the U.S. who made a statement in both their home country and in Europe. In the time before American heiresses went looking to “buy” titles through marriage, these young women made quite a stir in Regency England. The book chronicle
... mores their social lives, marriages, and the their deft use of the financial resources they commanded to live independent and interesting lives at a time where women rarely had control of their wealth. They asserted themselves in the political arenas through their husbands and through their substantial social networks. Based primarily on their letters, the book details a portrait of history through the eyes of these American women. less
