review 1: SPOILER ALERT: Most of the reason for my low rating for this book has to do with the end. Because there IS no end. I guess this author wanted to set up a long involved mystery series, but I can't even say how frustrating it was to get through the elaborate setting up of the complex mystery and have it end without resolving the biggest questions. I can't understand how this book got so many high ratings, I really can't. Maybe those people like mysteries that aren't resolved at the end?All of that said, the characters were interesting and original, if at times oddly overlapping. The writing was clear and the main character/narrator was strong and interesting, if a bit stupidly fool-hardy at time. She also set off to interview people quite a few times and then didn't a... moresk key questions which was highly irritating. But what a let-down.
review 2: This is a first rate thriller!!! Jen Blood is a great writer of this genre. Her pace is even - never too slow or fast - keeping the action continuous without causing the reader fatigue. The writing is clean and well-excuted. There's no work on the readers part to piece things together (how the scene is playing out by madly searching for clues to how a reader should feel, for example). Jen Blood infuses all her clean sentences with strong imagery that is never repetitive or tunes the reader out with its preening. The story is solid and all the characters are well drawn. I had no issues keeping anyone straight and I thought the management of the love interests were top notch. Each situation was unique, with desireable traits allowing the reader to hope for either! That's impressive. The best part about this fist installment of the Erin Solomon mystery series is the brilliant execution of red herrings. Jen Blood masterfully leads the reader along by allowing them to believe they've caught the author in an obvious (though still interesting) lay-up to the core of the story. Nope! And then, with great pacing and tension, the book closes with the reader rushing to buy the next book because, OMG, it can't be over!!!!When I turned that last page and realized that it was (sadly) over, I laughed out loud in delight. There was none of the usual wind-down or even the confusingly abrupt. While the first story was completed with book 1, the overall story still has so much speed and distance, that purchasing book two wasn't even a question. That is a good book!I totally recommend this! less
