review 1: 3.5. Not the type of book I would usually go for, but I actually quite liked it. An emotional, quirky coming of age story with a definite twist. And anything with cool independent mortician chicks is good with me! This book hit the mark on relationships with parents and teenagers, which made me tear up a bit at one point. I think this could be a good read for someone who has experienced a loss in their lives. All in all a quick, but touching read!
review 2: For the most part, I found this an enjoyable read. The prose is engaging and well paced. Donna's sorrow over the loss of her father feels genuine as does her new interest in being a mortician. There are some interesting characters, but I found myself getting irritated with Donna and her beef with her mother.
... more The tension between them didn't feel authentic and the anger Donna feels towards her mother feels contrived. Also, the family's shunning of her aunt, and then convenient acceptance in the end, doesn't feel believable. Her new best friend Liz seems to come and go at convenient times. We are built up to expect a ritual scene with her aunt and Liz, but it never happens. Very disappointing. Overall, the setting, the cast of characters, and the emotional angst all work, as well as the language. I imagine Violi's skill will keep getting better with more experience. less
