review 1: The author of so many books made quite the subject herself - and the one who took up the challenge did a rather good job of it. I admit I enjoyed the book that was as much romance as history, but what caught me was the contradiction of a woman who wrote about the constraints of a time and class and wrote almost as a feminist (in my opinion). It frustrates that she could not have written so well of an age if it hadn't been her own constraint but I wanted much better for her by the end. She wanted what we have today, but she was blinded by the mores that so many of her own characters suffered - like Madame Olenska. Could she have enjoyed her desires - could anyone - living under such restraints? I don't know, but I certainly enjoyed the speculation this book grante... mored me.
review 2: I have to say I wasn't the biggest fan of "The Age of Desire" by Jennie Fields. At first I really felt like I was going to like this story of the famous author Edith Wharton and her love affair with Morton Fullerton, but as the book droned on, I found myself disconnected and bored. The love interest was introduced on the first page but it took until page 100 for the good stuff to start happening and then it felt like the rest of the book was about her agonizing about the affair not happening anymore. The on again off again aspect of this book was so matter of fact that I found it uninteresting and boring. I thought I would really enjoy the relationship between Edith and Anna, her secretary and close friend, but I found I didn't feel like they were friends at all. I think the author should have showed more the friendship between them because it always felt like a distant employer/employee relationship. I found Jennie Fields' depiction of Wharton was stale. I didn't feel for this character, good or bad. I wouldn't recommend this book to others and will probably hesitate before reading another book by this author. less
