review 1: Genius. The colors are perfect, and Fosberry picks a decent line-up of female role models that are still relevant today. Through the trailblazers, little girls can see what it means to be a doctor or an astronaut or an activist (and just in case they don't, there's a section at the end that explains it in a little more detail for the parent, and a neat one sentence sum-up for the child). However, I wouldn't include "mommy" as a career/role model. I'd like my child to know that she can be a mommy AND an astronaut, if she so chooses. And, you know, NASA hasn't been totally defunded by then.
review 2: This is a great fictional story that includes the accomplishments of a handful of women who changed the world, such as Sally Ride, Rosa Parks, and Marie Curie. I
... moret encourages both girls and boys to go after their dreams just as these women did. Isabella models a positive example of self-identity and self-affirmation as she decides that she possesses the best parts of all the women she looks up to. I would use this story to increase young students' interest in women's history and because it has a good message for young girls especially. It would be a good read aloud book, which can also be tied to a mini-lesson on the accomplishments of the famous women described in the back of the book. less
