Jodie Whittaker as the 13th Doctor

This is a just a quick reaction to the announcement that Jodie Whittaker will be replacing Peter Capaldi as the Doctor.

I don’t really know Jodie Whittaker. All I’ve seen her in is Attack the Block and Black Mirror. She was really good, but those were also quite a while ago and very different roles. My wife thought she was great in Broadchurch, but I haven’t seen that. I do think it makes a lot of sense for Doctor Who’s new showrunner, Chris Chibnall (who worked on Broadchurch), to bring in someone he’s familiar with.

I know there is/will be a lot of debate about the Doctor being played by a woman. Some people are really excited about the change, while others are… let’s say, skeptical. My opinion is that this has been brewing for quite some time. I think the introduction of Missy was the first obvious sign that there would eventually be a female Doctor, but there have been other indications as well. Before this announcement, I thought that the shift would take place with the 14th Doctor, but I’m not surprised it happened now.

My only concern is that the writers will treat this Doctor differently. Every Doctor has had a different personality, but underneath that, it’s always been the same character. The Doctor has always had the same basic motivations, and I don’t want to see drastic shifts in the nature of the character just because the Doctor is now a woman. She’s still the Doctor.

Now that the Doctor’s been announced, the next question is who will be her companion. I liked Bill, and wish she had had a longer run, but I’m glad that the 13th Doctor will get a fresh start. Bill’s run was really short, and I didn’t really like Clara, so I’m hoping that the new companion will get quite a bit of time to really develop next to Whittaker.

Overall, I’m excited for the change and I’m ready for the new Doctor. Only 5 more months until the Christmas episode!
