review 1: The Stamp Collector is a story about a writer and a prison guard that secretly have a letter stamp system going on so that the prisoners can have stories to read and can communicate with the outside world. The stories that the guard spends these prisoners are stories that can completely excite someone, allows their imagination to run wild and also give them hope that they will survive the hard times. This story is so beautiful and it shows the humanity of people, that there is good in everyone and that sometimes it is the littlest of things that can make a big difference. People who read this book will be allowed to experience a different way of life. This book allows readers to look beyond what is right in front of them and see that deep down everyone needs love and that ... moresometimes a mistake can ruin the rest of your life but that doesn’t make you a bad person.
review 2: An unlikely friendship develops, between a city boy who falls in love with collecting stamps that take his imagination to other worlds and a country boy who falls in love with words and the power of stories. The city boy grows up to be a prison guard to make ends meet. The country boy grows up to be a writer. His stories, which are critical of his government’s regime, put him in jail for life. It is in this unlikely place that the two men meet and form a friendship. Both men filled with fear of breaking the rules, the writer begins to tell his story. You can have each of your students create their own personal stamp. The stamp should be colorful and represent their culture and religion. This allows the students to celebrate and honor their own unique cultures. This also gives the students a chance to learn about their other peers. You can have them share their stamp with the class and hang them around the room. less
