review 1: Leigh and her sister Kai were shocked when their parents moved them away from the beach in Mendocino, California to a place called Hangtown, where they live in a graveyard. Yes, Leigh's dad thought owning his own graveyard would be a good idea. He pulls his family away from the home they love, lines their walkway with misprinted tombstones, and uses grave liners as flower planters. Her mother, reeling from the move, locks herself away and spends all her time painting seascapes. Kai seems to be blossoming at their new high school, running track, making friends, and even falling in love. Leigh isn't fairing so well. First of all, she is forced labor for her father. He doesn't like dealing with the people who come to the cemetery to buy graves. It makes him uncomfortable, so ... morehe leaves fifteen-year-old Leigh to deal with them. Leigh is witty, smart, sassy, and sometimes even snarky, all the things I love in a heroine. But Leigh is also very sad and wounded. Her parents are so disconnected, Kai is so full of life, but Leigh has a lot of baggage. Her best friend disappeared from her life, she doesn't have any friends, she is disconnected. All she has is the sad little cemetery office, her sadness, and her York peppermint patties. Then Dario is hired to dig graves. He is twenty, handsome, and exceedingly compassionate. Dario gives Leigh courage to do many things she did not thinks she could, but sometimes he is at a loss to help her. Leigh hides so much of her pain, sometimes it is hard to break through. When Dario reveals a big secret, it strikes a crushing blow, and Leigh will either use all her hidden strength, humor, and talent to rise above or she will let it destroy her hope. Jennifer Longo's novel is both humorous and heartbreaking, filled with hope and joy but also with devastation and loss. I found myself laughing out loud one moment and reaching for a tissue the next. A thoroughly enjoyable novel for high school and up.
review 2: Three and a half stars. I liked this book mostly because it was unique in that the girl isn't really saved by her love for a boy. The boy she loves is completely inaccessible romantically, so she really ends up saving herself with the help of others. I also liked that she was just a regular girl who felt real. I wish they would have picked a different cover as it doesn't reflect the girl or the feeling of the book at all. less
