review 1: SWEPT AWAY TO SCOTLAND!Mystery and sensual chemistry between Lady Georgette and James will hook readers into this story. The setting was eliquently discriptive of historical Scotland. I enjoyed the building attraction and humor throught the story, most of all. Elsie, Georgette's foul-mouthed ladies maid was one of the most alluring and addictive characters, though she only had a minor role. I want to know more about her, especially since she is a 'soiled' woman for the time period in the story. Georgette, I felt, was a little swoonish-however, this is expected in a historical romance. I liked how she wanted to stay single after being widowed...it made a brave impression. James was a delicious hero. I enjoyed the reunion with his Dad (whom he'd thought would condemn him). I... more love stories about family reuniting or mending disagreements. The only thing I wished could have happened was for the marriage consumation in the beginning to have had more detail. The heroine completely forgot their night together... the strength of attraction she felt for the hero seemed skimmed over. It did nicely move into how outwardly attractive he was, but I couldn't feel Georgette's personal attraction to him so much to justify her longing for him later in the story. I recommend WHIS to those who enjoy mystery, sweet romance, excellent historical setting narritive, and a heartwarming love story. A beautiful way to be swept away to Scotland!Laurie Kozlowski
review 2: Had I not gone to a signing for Eloisa James in Birmingham, I would never have heard of Jennifer McQuiston, who came along to do a joint event. And let me tell you, the swag for these romance novelists put the YA and fantasy authors to shame that I've been to see. Bags, pens, sticky note pads, even a short story. :)Anyway, my co-conspirator and I couldn't resist picking up the two McQuiston books they had at BAM, and I'm glad we did. WHAT HAPPENS IN SCOTLAND is a regency novel that is so unexpected that you can't help but love it.The story: Lady Georgette Thorold wakes up in the morning, head pounding to find a naked stranger lying beside her, a ring on her finger, and no memory of the night before. After she hits him with the chamber pot, she flees the inn, looking for solace in her cousin's home, only to discover one inconsistency after another in righting her life.It was an amusing romp which turns the genre upside down. Georgette and James aren't even on screen at the same time for much of the book, as they trace their night's footsteps - separately, to see how they ended up in that bed.I look forward to reading her next two books. less
