review 1: In the middle of the longest winter I can remember and no end to snow and cold in sight, this romance set on the beach in Brighton during Victorian times was a welcome read. Our heroine’s father taught her to swim in a secret cove when she was a young girl, even though most thought it beyond inappropriate for a young woman to swim. Unfortunately, her father passes away shortly thereafter leaving Caroline, her sister Penelope, and her mother in “gentile poverty.” A few days later, Caroline saves a handsome Scottish soldier, David Cameron, who had drunkenly stumbled into her cove. He disappears from Brighton the next day, but not from her thoughts. Over the next decade, he becomes the idealized man she dreams of falling in love with. They meet again when he join... mores his mother on a trip to Brighton taken to restore her health. He stumbles upon her shortly after she’s been humiliated by the handsomest young bachelor of the summer set who had kissed Caroline on a bet and told everyone it was like kissing a boy. When David learns of this, he take it upon himself to persuade the young men of the town otherwise but may have gone too far when Caroline becomes the most sought after young woman of the summer. Multiiple themes run through the book that appear in other books, such as a young woman who must marry for money, not love to support herself and her family (or at least believes she must). The role that gossip and whispers play in high society, whether devastating or building up a person’s reputation and acceptance within society. Even though I’ve seen these themes many times before, I enjoyed the setting, the writing, the hero and heroine, and how their relationship develops. I wish we knew and understood David a bit more. He refuses to fall in love because of the way he ruined a young woman’s life, the precipitating incident for him nearly drowning when Caroline rescued him. The true circumstances are dribbled throughout the book, and revealed so late I found it hard to accept the rhythm of his healing process. 4/5 on my 5 star romance scale
review 2: This is the next book in the series I reviewed a couple of weeks ago. While I really enjoyed the first book, I found I enjoyed this one even more. The book takes place in the same world as What Happens In Scotland, but this time David has gone down to Brighton for an extended holiday with his Mother. This also happens to be the same place he had previously attempted to take his life 11 years earlier and had been saved by a local girl. They meet again on the same beach, and strike-up a friendship knowing nothing more can happen because he is unwilling to fall in love again and she needs to find a husband with more financial security. At least that is the plan. While this is the second book in the Avon series, this book stands alone well. The same humor is there from What Happens in Scotland, but this book expands upon all of the elements that were present in the previous book and this time knocks them out of the park. The humor is still there, but is more subtle and rarely takes the reader out of the story to land the joke. The characters are just as well developed, and the struggles they each are going through are relatable. The challenges of an unmarried 23 year old women during this time were real, and having to chose between the financial security and future of her family and the man she loves is a realistic problem to have, and is done without too much angst. I hope we will finally get to see David and James work out their differences. There is a bromance brewing there that I think McQuiston will be able to handle with the same humor and charm she has put into these last two novels less
