review 1: While there were several occasions when I wanted to reach through the pages of this book and throttle the main character who was also the naive first person narrator of the book, I also found that I couldn't put the book down. The Fever Tree is so well-written, I felt transported to South Africa in the late nineteenth century. And it's based on an actual cover up by the British government and Cecil Rhodes, he of the Rhodes Scholarship, in which many Africans died of smallpox in the diamond mines. Fascinating and brutal, and fortunately, ultimately redemptive. I highly recommend it!
review 2: This book started out rather formulaic but eventually came into its own. A young woman in Victorian England is orphaned and poor and circumstances have her emigrate to Sout
... moreh Africa in the 1880's where she leads a pioneer type life. The central theme revolves around her naivete. The interesting historical fiction part revolves around the scandal of an outbreak of a deadly disease in the diamond mining community in South Africa. Betrayal, love, humility and the "heroine's" flaws are the highlights. I did enjoy this book, despite brief romance novel type moments. It was well-paced but at the risk of keeping many characters one dimensional. It was interesting to compare the woman in this story to the more exemplary and admirable Jane Eyre type characters. Makes you wonder about the subtleties in a person's character that can make some resilient and lead others astray. less

A haunting story of human foibles and the boundaries of love, forgiveness and redemption.

Main character whines too much but maybe that's to be expected in a coming of age book.
