review 1: This book made me laugh a lot. It's really funny and it's really unique. I love the way that the author mix ways of writing like in scripts or with bullet points. and I like Earl, maybe if he would have been the main character I would have liked this book best. Greg, instead, was annoying must of the times and he was really selfish, and maybe that is realistic because every teenager is that way but I believe that a character in a book has to have some development, to change in some way, and I feel like Greg didn't. I also had a problem with Rachel. I feel like we didn't even knew her so when she died it didn't affect us at all. Maybe if it was a shorter book I would have liked it more. Anyway, I have a really good time reading this book, the funny parts were great and I th... moreink that that saves the book, at least for me
review 2: Well this was an unexpected read for me. I did not anticipate I would laugh out loud (several times) reading a book that involved a girl dying of cancer. The fact that Jesse Andrews was able to pull that off is a testament to his talent. I love the fact that, unlike a lot of YA books, his main character is an unattractive looking teenager, with a number of realistic teenage flaws? In fact, sometimes I found myself think, gee, this main character is a bit of a douchebag! Yet, despite this, I was highly entertained by this debut novel. Probably because it did not romanticise a teenage boy's reaction to being forced into friendship with a dying girl he barely knows. It seemed to me a refreshingly honest account of the situation Greg found himself in. The only reason this got 4 instead of 5 stars is, narrating in the first person as the author of the actual book, Greg carried on a bit too much about how awful this book he is writing was, to the point it started to annoy me. Besides that one small negative I highly recommend giving it a go. less
