review 1: Don't be fooled by the title; the book covers more than just the male member. This collection of writings cover social aspects of issues ranging from puberty to female ejaculation to suicide to religion etc.Even though Bering uses scientific terms and jargon the book is an easy read and full of humour. You might not agree with everything that is said, but these essays definitely will leave you thinking and pondering.
review 2: This was an enjoyable collection of essay on a wide-ranging list of topics, most of which are considered by a lot of people to be prurient or taboo. The subjects are approached with a light touch and in a conversational manner, so the science content is not as deep as I would like, but it does make for a fast and fun read. I did drop the ... morerating for one poorly thought-out essay about why Bering would choose a taxi-cab with a bible and cross prominently displayed, over one without. Unfortunately his reasoning was sloppy, and feeds into the negative stereotypes that exist about non-believers. His argument fell into a trap which he actually discussed in one of the other essays (that a statistical difference in a population does not necessarily justify distinguishing between individuals on that single characteristic). less
