review 1: i am not really sure how i feel about this story, or rather, how to review this novel - i am still digesting the read. it starts out quite quirky and light...but this is a very layered and nuanced story which has quite a serious heart. i was impressed by the book, and the fact this is grant's debut novel - wonderful accomplishment. i am also a sucker for newfoundland literature! (yay!) i greatly enjoyed the characters, and particularly fell in love with winnifred - the co-narrating tortoise. but by the very end of the story...i felt it didn't quite come together as strongly as i hoped it would. i figured out one of oddly wobbly's (aka audrey. love the nickname!) mysteries fairly early one, so wasn't surprised by the twist. but i think some of the backstory fill-in muddled... more the waters a bit. i am very happy i finally had a chance to read the book, and i certainly look forward to reading more from grant in the future.
review 2: I loved so much about this book -- the tone, the characters and their many eccentricities -- especially the whimsical Audrey Flowers, the word play, and the absurdities of plot. I especially loved the scene where Audrey disarms the Air Marshal and also the idea of Uncle Thoby constructing his own prosthetic arm at the Leg and Arm Reconstruction Camp. The whole book was so delightfully hilarious, but, grounded in characters you can't help but love and who grow in insight and compassion as the story progresses. If Jessica Grant and I were in the "same class" at school I guarantee we'd be best friends. less
