On Sunday, March 26th, American women’s national soccer team star Julie Johnston married NFLer Zach Ertz at Bacara Resort and Spa in Santa Barbara, California. Through the years, the celebrity favourite wedding venue has also hosted the weddings of Nick Carter and Lauren Kitt, Fergie and Josh Duhamel, Travis Barker and Shanna Moakler, and Jennie Garth and Peter Facinelli.
Johnston (now Ertz) married her groom before seven bridesmaids in blush pink gowns, his groomsmen, friends and family. A white-tented reception followed, with a floral chandelier above the dance floor. After they were married, the newlyweds traveled to Hawaii for their honeymoon.
Announcing the wedding day on Instagram, the groom noted, “So Blessed to be able to marry my best friend!!”
On Monday, the bride posted a romantic photo and said, “…my wonderful husband thank you for everything, for loving me unconditionally, for your amazing friendship and for trying to keep up with me on the dance floor. Yesterday was EPIC!”
The long distance couple – she’s based in Chicago with the womens’ pro Red Bulls, he in Philadelphia with the NFL’s Eagles – were engaged in February 2016, with a ring he picked out with the help of his mother. Johnston invited both her mother and future mother-in-law when wedding dress shopping in Chicago last summer, just weeks before she left to compete with Team USA at the Rio Olympics, where the reigning World Cup champions lost in a shock quarterfinal to eventual silver medallists Sweden.
Johnston, 25, and Ertz, 26, first met in 2012 through mutual friends, while he was playing college football at Stanford, and she was on the women’s soccer team at nearby Santa Clara. This is the first marriage for both.
