review 1: It took me a hundred pages or more to get into this story and to start to enjoy Audrey. And half a page to realize when the point of view changed and it was the tortoise speaking. I wondered in the end, did I miss something? I"m in the dark as to the relationship of Audrey's father, Walter Flowers and "Uncle" Thoby. They are not related; he didn't really lose his arm; he comes from a different part of England than Walter. For a long while I thought they were a gay couple and still feel that's probably the case but in the end, as far as Audrey's concerned, he's the next most important person in her life after her father, regardless.

... moreotation marks didn't bother me at all, perhaps because it seemed to mirror how untethered and unconventional Audrey's thoughts were. I don't know if Audrey has a learning disability or is truly just Odd but I don't think it matters a bit. There are some books where it's enough just to witness and not necessary to understand. I need to process a bit more but I can say for certain that I would not say no to another book by Jessica Grant. (I know, I know, I'm sure everyone who liked the book said that. Can't be helped.) less
