review 1: As a violinist and violist, I more than loved this book, I think I truly appreciated it. Jessica Martinez perfectly embodies the spirit of a violinist. The pressure to do well (although I don't know anyone as harsh on the inside as Diana) is a big part of this book, and it should be, because it's a large part of a violinist's life. So are the butterflies, the anxiety, that never goes away. Knowing what's right- well, that's different from being able to do what's right so easily- which is why I envy Carmen. Of course, I envy the fact she has a 1.2 MILLION dollar violin, the fact she is so so so talented, the fact she is famous and going places (Juliard!!!) in the near future. But Jessica Martinez truly showed that you need SO MUCH dedication to get that far, and sometimes... more even that dedication isn't enough. (Cue Jeremy.) All of that aside, this book is an eye-opener, a book that makes you wonder if you truly love what you do, a book that makes you question how far you are willing to go to have your dreams come true. If you are a musician, a violinist especially, you HAVE to read this book. But if you are a lyrical dancer, a grafitti artist, or just a plain old person, this book is something you will be able to connect to. I highly highly highly recommend it to anyone who is willing to listen to me. Now, I have to go practice my viola...
review 2: What a fun read! I picked this up to potentially add to my drug studies unit for HS students. It doesn't fit the mold (looking for a bit more hard core drug use/addiction) that I am looking for but it was full of choices, life, love, and desire. Carmen has been pushed by her mother to succeed in the classical world of violin. Carmen has been home schooled so she lacks some of the social skills she dreams of. Her best friend is her tutor and she helps Carmen grow-up a bit in the story. Carmen meets her biggest violin rival, Jeremy, and from the second he sees her it is love at first sight for the both of them. It is a fun read full of choices, addiction, dependence, and young adult growing up. less

Virtuosity is one of the greatest love stories with a blend of competition and addiction.
