review 1: I have to say I liked the plot more than the romance with this one. I liked Doran's honor and strength as he tried to figure out what was going wrong in the wild lands. I just didn't get a submissive vibe from the character and didn't really get his relationship with Xan. I also didn't understand how Xan being convicted of treason could be trusted to guard Doran's back despite his success in the gladitor's ring. For me the relationship lacked heat and just didn't sit well with these two. I still enjoyed the story just kind of wish for a better chemistry between the two MC.
review 2: I have a fondness for Ancient Rome and similar surroundings. I'm not sure why - I just do. There are quite a few excellent historical MM romances and this one should stand very
... more solidly on the list. Great characters mixed with an exciting plot make for a fun read. It is not overly angst ridden - and the conflict comes from within and without but it is not over the top. Personalities do not change (which I appreciate) and people are who they are. The characters also do things that they have to be forgiven for but they don't become someone they are not either - in ways this is rather unapologetic. Since I believe that is probably how history went it rings more authentic to me. Not like it's completely historically accurate - its fiction - but definitely enjoyed this one! less

4.5 stars. I wish there was a sequel. What happens after they return to the capital?
