review 1: BOOK TITLE: Seed, Pumpkin, Sprout, Pie by Jill EsbaumSHORT DESCRIPTION: This is a wonderfully informative book that shows the life cycle and progression of a pumpkin. It uses photos to help illustrate the step by step process. FOCUS: Informational Text Mini-Lesson – Adding Details Many fictional stories have some basis in fact and will breifly touch on a topic (a man planted a seed and grew a pumpkin) and then the story continues into something fictional, however for a deeper understanding, often more details are needed in non-fiction writing. CC STANDARD: W.K.2. Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic. I do- What did our boo... morek teach us about ? (pumpkins). What about pumpkins? (how they grow). Does it tell us a quick summary like you plant a seed and get a pumpkin, or does it go step by step and describe each stage? (step by step). What are the steps we learned about? (list stages). So by adding details about each stage, we have learned all about how pumpkins can grow from seed to pie. We do- Teacher will ask directions on how to put backpacks away. She will use a backpack and pretend to not know how. She will call one student at a time to give her directions (following them word for word, often leaving steps you know they are thinking of but not saying). After a few students have had a turn, ask was it easy to use lots of details when explaining something? (no). But it is important if they have never done it. Just like the author added lots of details since we have never grown a pumpkin before. You do- In your journals today I want you to write the directions for how you eat breakfast in the morning. Pretend I have never had breakfast at your house and you need to teach me how. Include lots of details to help me.
review 2: This book has wonderful and colorful pictures of pumpkins and is very informative. This book contains information all about Pumpkins, how they grow, their life cycle and what they can be used for. Students can use this book in the classroom to find out information about pumpkins. Since it is an informational text, I can use the book to implement a lesson on the different features of a informational book, such as captions and photographs. less
