review 1: Toxic SecretsReviewed by Brittani for the Sinful thoughts book blogI give it a 5 star! This book in my opinion started off a little slow, but picked up around the 15% mark. It was filled with a lot of deep emotions about first loves and being stuck in a harmful situation and relationship. The central characters were mostly very likeable and real. I started going into this story thinking I was going to root for Courtney and her then boyfriend Phillip but boy how wrong I was. Courtney is your everyday sweet teen the age of 17, she loves her friends and adores her mother, and she works and studies hard. She has the best friends named Kendra and Reed who happen to be boyfriend and girlfriend they just seems to be her rock , Kendra betters Courtney and makes her more outgo... moreing, and Reed is just the big brother she’s never had. Now Jaxon is Reeds cousin who’s visiting from California, who gets set up on a blind date with Courtney at a party. I Felt so much chemistry from both the characters but let me tell you these two face a lot of obstacles. Phillip being the biggest one, Phillip is Courtney’s Ex Verbally abusive Boyfriend who I just wanted to punch in the face every time I turned a page with him in it. And Jaxon is hiding some pretty deep stuff himself just have to get the book to read more.I Personally enjoyed the book a lot, it felt real and deep, He teaches about abusive relationship, and how keeping secrets can destroy you sometimes, I honestly can’t wait to read part two in the series.
review 2: 2.5 stars but would have been 3-4 stars if it hadn't have had such a horrible ending...I really enjoyed this until the ending. She's a high schooler, but not too juvenile, he's a 22 year old with lots of secrets, only a few of which we learn about in this book, I guess all will become clear in the follow-up. There were lots of belly tingling happy times in this that made the ending even more brutal and, sad to say, spoiled the story for me. Nasty. The writing was good, better than usual quality but I don't enjoy being left feeling like their future's bleak. less
